Gleeless
November 20th, 2009 at 15:13Hot, hot day. The baby is refusing to stay awake between feeds, and I’m bribing Raeli to keep her fluids up with the promise of icecream if she finishes a tall glass of ice water. (she just announced that it’s good to live in Tasmania because we have no bears or lions – Tourism Tasmania should totally use that)
The only reason I’m not still in my pyjamas is because the sun dress is lighter and has easier baby-access.
My current book-in-progress is Vacations from Hell, because I don’t have the brainpower for Cherie Priest’s awesome Boneshaker. Or maybe it’s just too hot to deal with brown typesetting. Truefact: sepia ink makes you feel hotter.
I should be packing dolls, which should have been posted DAYS ago, but it’s so hot and my brain is fried and it’s not like I’m going to leave the house with the kids today anyway (I should still pack the dolls but my brain is saying ‘won’t be able to post until Monday therefore why bother until then?’ which is the kind of brain-business that means they weren’t posted days ago). Why yes, I am a world champion procrastinator. I did take an order for a full nativity set and other Christmas dolls which makes me feel vaguely productive.
I’ve managed my words, though I haven’t kept up my amazing lead from yesterday. I had to keep stopping every half hour this morning to feed and it’s hard to keep up writing momentum with that…
Gah, okay this post is getting all maudlin and excuse-laden, what’s the point of that? I think mainly I am grumpy because the DVR was full up with stupid John Safran episodes I didn’t want to listen to anyway which means Glee didn’t record last night and I’ve been waiting for that ep all week! I may use this as an excuse to test out downloading an episode from itunes to watch on my darling iPod… (seriously, 72 minutes to download? what is this, 2002?)
Ahem.
I am love love loving Adventures in SciFi Publishing – how have I missed this for so long? I’ve downloaded and listened to several eps so far. I like the format, I like the hosts, and the focus on SF books and authors… it’s all goodness! I picked a few eps from all over the place, almost at random… and found myself listening to Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman this morning. Wow, what an awesome interview. My Dragonlance reading years were more than 15 years ago, back when the closest thing to an author blog was Piers Anthony’s Author Notes, so it was weird and wonderful to actually hear the behind the scenes story which answered so many questions I didn’t realise I had.
For the first time I found myself thinking of Dragonlance with a warm nostalgic buzz instead of cringing with embarrassment at how many of those shiny, shiny books I owned. I’m pretty sure this is a good thing. Nostalgia is fun.
The most recent ep, with agent Eddie Schneider at World Fantasy, has some really interesting perspectives on promotion, publicity and the directions new media will take.
In short, all you people who recced Adventures of Sci-Fi Publishing to me, well done you! Absolutely spot on the money. (
girliejones, you’re listening to this, right?)
Okay, that’s it, if you need me I’ll be flopped over here in a corner, being glad I’m not in Adelaide. Or Perth. Or Brisbane. Because yes, Hobart does get hot! But not that hot.
