Pretty Me This
December 14th, 2009 at 23:08Most of the blogs I read are about writing, reading or, well, books. A few about other SF/fantasy media. Several about Arsenal. Several about feminism.
But not nearly enough that feed my obsession with pretties – art and fabric, preferably both combined. Jem and I went out with friends to the Fashion Fantasia the other night, a wearable art show made and modelled by students. It was lovely to see some mad creativity on show, and the display was gorgeous. Sadly I couldn’t face a second half after a long interval (Jem was asleep and had struggled babyfully with the too-loud music), but I plan to go back next year.
It occurred to me that I only look at fabric online these days when I’m, you know, browsing Etsy for stuff to buy. Which is faintly wrong. So I went hunting for some new crafty/arty/fabric places to explore.
I actually followed a Google adword to Saffron Craig’s website, mostly to check if she was that artist who made the awesome owl fabric. She is, and does lovely fairy designs too. I got rather hooked on scrolling through her blog, looking at all the pretty colours.
Then via Saffron’s blogroll I found Love Illustrated, a pleasing blog of design, arty arrangements and pretty photographs, by Australian illustrator Tara Davy.
Gorgeous stuff. Her style of putting things together reminded me wistfully of Yarnstorm, aka Jane Brocket, who was my favourite art blogger until she started getting all these contracts for coffee table books and stopped blogging. While I was googling to check her real name, and feeling all wistful about the loss of one of my favourite blogs I discovered that she is, in fact, still blogging, and somehow I missed this entirely.
On a final note, I recently closed my eBay store for the Deepings Dolls, deciding to concentrate on Etsy, and drawing attention to our (soon to be revamped) website via Google Adwords, since I was basically using eBay to catch passing traffic, and they’re not as generous to their regular storeholders as they used to be as far as fees, etc. go. But I recently discovered Folksy, which seems to be a similar type of set up to Etsy, only with a lot more interactive listings including how-to craft instructions, which is pretty awesome. Has anyone else sold through Folksy? Should I be looking at listing there too? More importantly, should I be shopping there?
If only there was some festival around the corner which was a blatant excuse to purchase frivolous items! Oh, wait…
